Good list. If you've got water, you can survive the high heat. Maybe not enjoy it, but survive it.

I stay away from the wet towel on the fan trick mainly, I guess, because as a kid, before God invented Freon™, the only cooling was swamp coolers, and just the memory of the smell is mildly sickening. Not to mention the mold spores that made me wheeze as an asthmatic kid. My trick these days is a combo that's more direct than a swamp cooler: Cold shower and then dry off standing in front of a high-power floor fan. Evaporative cooling where it counts!

The pisser about this is that my misery is unnecessary. Back on June 26th I ordered an air conditioner through Amazon from a New Jersey company (for the benefit of the search spiders, that would be Allergy Be Gone in New Jersey). They took my order and the extra fee for "express" delivery, then when the promised date passed they discovered, oh darn, it wasn't actually in stock. But not to worry, it'll be in stock in a couple of days. Only it wasn't, but another week for sure. It wasn't. When it finally got there, last Friday, to add insult to injury they unilaterally downgraded the shipping from FedEx air to ground, delaying it another week. It's now in the hands of FedEx, thank gods, and at last report had left New Jersey. Things are looking up.

To summarize: That would be Allergy Be Gone, an Amazon Merchant, screwing up an order as badly as ever I have seen in my 52 years of life. I certainly would never shop there again, nor would I recommend them to anyone else. The thought crossed my mind that if they'd been a local company I'd have filed a complaint with the DA, but upon reflection, I don't think the DA can prosecute a charge of "criminal incompetence" because there's no such thing. Technically. I guess they didn't break the law, but if I expire of heat stroke they'll certainly be guilty of negligent homicide and criminal negligence.

Damn this heat's making me cranky! I need another cold shower...
