To spank or not to spank, that is the question.
I was brought up that way, but my mother carried it too far. I still turned out OK. Worried I might not be able to curb my impulses as a mother, I spoke with a friend of mine who was raising three kids while my first one was still in diapers. She told me I could break the chain. And do it differently than my mom. It was that simple. be determined to be different.
When they are toddlers a light tap on the hand or the butt with a firm "no" and a grimacing, authoritative face is usually plenty. However, between the ages of four and seven you encounter difficulties as they roam their parameters. It was during this time I used a wooden spoon on their butts and kept a "fly flap" around, disciplining my kids on occasion after the advice and direction of an elderly lady whom I adored and who had raised generations of kids.
It was never necessary after the age of seven, as I used different methods to reason with them. (No allowance, no sleepovers.....and as they got older...no TV, no friends over....and older yet.......no telephone and no school dances. After that (age16), the best you can do is take away the car keys. If you haven't got them under control by then, you better hope they were born with common sense!)
I also had a friend who didn't spank even one of his three kids and they turned out fine, thank you.
