The author of Please Don't Eat the Daisies and The Snake Has All the Lines, collections of comic essays based on her family life, had five sons. She kept a carpet slipper for disciplinary purposes because, she said, while the noise produced was awesome, the actual damage inflicted was negligible.
I also used to moderate my voice, using primate behavioral studies as a model. Deep growling was authority; higher pitched shouting was alarm. If I wanted subordination, I needed to use a deeper voice, not the voice that warned of a leopard in the vicinity.
Re: The Snake Has All the Lines: One of her sons came home disconsolate with the role of Adam in the school Bible history play. She told him, "But honey, that's wonderful! You have the lead!" He replied, "Yeah, but the snake has all the lines."
