They have wings. They don't have to tread.

;)

You would be surprised -- or maybe not -- how many liberals agree in practice with your assessment of discipline.

I seldom spanked -- and never do now, since the youngest is fifteen. I smacked hands often with toddlers. Playing with plugs in outlets? Pulling on tablecloths? (Who knows what may be on the table to come down on her head?) Throwing sand at a playmate? Sharp smack on the paw. I doubt the damage was anything near traumatic, but the children who visited my house didn't have to get sand washed out of their eyes.

Spanking followed things like running toward the street or going into the water alone. Physical peril should be associated with pain, and I believe that pain administered moderately by a hand that loves you is better than pain administered by an oncoming car.

I also agree that punishment should follow immediately, for preschoolers. Puppies. They are like puppies. They will not remember if it's not temporily connected to their transgression. Also, after it's over it can be over. For that reason, I used to wait for a little while to let them anticipate when they were older. Suspense is also a punishment. heh heh

We didn't always punish wrongdoing if it could be discussed, but always, always punished lies. Lies undermine everything.
