Pretty much my philosophy on spanking. Exactly like puppies. Watch how a mama dog trains puppies sometime.
It's primarily for kids too little to deal with reasoning or more complex things like time outs, and never more than a single quick swat somewhere it surprises but does no physical harm. Butts are best, but hard to reach. My dad had a finger-flick he would do on top of the head that stung like heck. His other great technique was to fold a leather belt in half, push the two ends together so the middles bulged up and down, and pull it hard at the ends to snap it. Makes a noise like a bullwhip, and really grabs the attention. Never once did he hit us with it, but we were thinking about it a lot.
