After all, I'm a child of the 60's AND Canadian (about as liberal as you can get....;~)
However, neither of my kids are dysfunctional. As a mattr of fact, compared to the whole neighbourhood of kids they grew up with around here, I would say they are very well adjusted. I also had the "THE GRIP" down. When the kids would misbehave in a store, I would kindly (but firmly) place my thumb and forefinger on the base of their neck, press hard and lead them out the door. Worked like a charm. No complaints.
They had to deal with my quirks and their father's, but at a distance as we weren't living together; therefore they didn't have live with the tension or the arguments or the lie of "keeping up with the Jones", for the sake of the kids.
We had wealthy families around us and ALL of their kids got caught up in drugs and were arrested for various things. Some ended up in rehab yet they had "lovely" parents who presented well, but somehow missed giving their kids the love and attention they needed, they were always just giving them all the money they needed to do whatever they wanted and none of them were taught the value of working responsibly for their money.
I used to be the home where all the kids in the neighbourhood came to and hung out, ate, and slept over. (sleeping bags, hotdogs, pizza and hot chocolate). I MADE my house a welcome home because I always knew where my kids were (and I was a single mom for 15 years). Some kids would come over to get away from their parents fighting, or their dad's girlfriend or mom's boyfriend.
My daughters' best friend at 16 got a brand new red Mercedez convertible (to match her Mom's black one). She was told she couldn't take it out of town. A few days later her family was out of town at their horse ranch for the weekend, they got the call their daughter was in jail in Orlando for drunk driving AND she had punched a policeman in the face who had tried to arrest her. (She had taken a carload of kids to Orlando for the weekend). Mom got into an accident and ruined her car drivng to Orlando to bail her out. This girl went into a downhill spiral, ended up a coke freak after high school and went through re-hab in another town. I see through the internet, this girl is now a champion sports athlete with many titles to her name, but she did it the hard way. My son's richest best friend (whom he had grown up with), became rebellious in his teen years and ended up in rehab twice. He's now a marine and on his second tour of duty in Iraq.
I've often wondered WHY this happens to kids. I think it's because the parents don't CARE that much, or devote the time LISTENING and being sensitive to what's happening in their kids lives.
Like the parents of those killers in Columbine. With an arsenal under the bed, I would say it's the PARENTS that are dysfunctional in the first place, and there's very little hope for the kids unless intervention and understanding come early.
