For the umpteenth time

I do understand your concerns, and I'd go so far as to wish the California plan were better than it is. But I also have to repeat that after over half a century of trusting business and the marketplace to provide health care for all Americans, it's time to declare that approach failed and try to do better. Claims that free-enterprise can do a better job fall pretty flat in the face of the reality of the present situation. We simply can't afford the usual Conservative approach of trying to fix a broken situation by doing the same thing harder. "Stay the course" is insane when the course has already been shown to lead to failure; time to change course.

As several people have commented, it serves the healthcare industry right. They've had a long time to deliver on their promises of better care at cheaper prices, but instead of innovation they've devoted all their efforts to lobbying against any challenge to their lucrative franchise. The healthcare industry is hardly the first to discover that resistance to change works only so long, and when the day of reckoning finally comes, it hurts all the more for having been postponed.

We can agree that things should never have come to this pass, but now that they have, universal healthcare programs are the best deal we can cut.
