In an earlier post, I lament the way scientific studies are created to fill a political movement's specific needs. I'll coin a phrase here and call such studies and scientific sounding political propaganda, sci-pop-prop.
We need a study linking man to hurricane formation!
We need a study negating the heating influence of the sun on warming!
You may note that these studies are going in to support an agenda. It's not "let's find out what causes hurricanes to form", it's "let's prove man is somehow causing more hurricanes."
John Dean's Conservatives without Conscience is a play on the Goldwater book Conscience of a Conservative and is about tarring the current batch of republicans as authoritarian Nazis.
"We need a book that gives authority to the pop-liberal association of conservatives and Nazis!"
"Gotcha. On it's way!"
The delicious irony of this book is it is a perfect example of the BS-authority figure propaganda it supposedly decries in the "father figure" symbology of the current crop of conservatives in power.
I'm going to do a little side by side here for your (and other hoodwinked liberals) clarification of what this process involves and how it has been used historically to try and reinforce false positions.
Here's an half-century old for selling Camel cigarettes. Selling death to unsuspecting customers by using an authority figure.

Notice anything about that doctor? Yes it's Olbermann's doppelganger. Olbermann's doppelganger would sell smokes by pretending to be a doctor. Olbermann, wears see-through fake glasses and does his best to look like a figure of authority. He has been carefully made up to fool the gullible masses. In the early 1940's a psychiatrist came up with a complex guide "facial map of honesty" His study showed features of faces that were "crooked", "shifty" or "unreliable". For DECADES businesses of the FORTUNE 500 employed this facial feature roadmap to determine which executives to hire and which to promote. Discrimination based on a crooked nose or two narrow-set eyes? Youbetcha!
This study was then employed by the media in the SALES game. Certain faces screamed honesty by creating associations. Olbermann, who the left here fawn over, is a prime example of this creation. His bushy dyed black eyebrows and uniformly grey temples and fake glasses are supposed to give him the look of intellectual authority. It's not a coincidence that he looks like he jumped right out of the Camel ad that suckered millions to their deaths.
Smokes or anti-Bush nonsense, both are selling lies to a public that want to believe. Yes, the folks already addicted to nicotine wanted to reaffirm that it was somehow healthy or not bad for you and seeing the authority figure of the doctor helped make them feel better when they read the ad.
Olbermann says that Lincoln pointed out that ground where folks have fallen cannot be hallowed and then goes on a orchestrated rhetorical rampage about the fact that the site has not been hallowed! And Bush is completely irrelevant to the rebuilding process - it's private land!
Only the same folks who go into MSNBC and want to hear reaffirmation of their own flawed anti-Bush thinking can listen to Olbermann's non-sequitur rant and not see that it is completely nonsensical!
MSNBC gives the folks the drivel they want to hear.
That's exactly what John Dean does with this book. He consult several bogus psychological studies about authoritarianism and weaves it into an intricate web that tells the leftists it markets too exactly what they want to hear:
BUSH=HITLER
and
CONServatives=NAZIS
So know the gullible leftist reader can say, "Yes! I knew it! Conservatives are using NAZI tactics and Bush is the new Hitler!" It's all about reaffirmation of existing beliefs.
In this Dean's book is no different than a sermon by the evangelical fundamentalists he detests! They, too, simply reaffirm their flocks belief patterns every Sunday and tell them what they want to hear.
Even his exploiting his links with Goldwater and the Nixon Presidency are used to give "authority" to his personal views. Just like the tobacco companies throwing a doctor on their ad to sell death-sticks, John Dean parades the corpse of Goldwater out to use "authority" to sell his "anti-authority" shtick.
Sorry Robert, you've been hoodwinked by someone who uses "authoritarian" psychology just as much as any "neo-con" does to achieve his goals. What's all the more, he takes a condemning view of the very thing he practices! A fascianting study of elaborate hypocrisy.
This constant push to equate conservatives with Nazis has gotten tiresome. It is especially tiresome for me because I know and am related to the people who lived under Hitler's rise to power. So anyone trying to compare America under Bush to Germany under Hitler is completely clueless.
This false comparison is especially damaging to liberals because it is so extreme. It only plays among the most hate-filled folks who are themselves the would-be Nazis. In fact the Nazis would put out pop-psychology books like John Dean's to incite the masses against their enemies. In this sense the would-be National Socialists are the socialists and leftists of today.
When we dig down into the heart of the matter we see the the left is even MORE authoritarian than the right. No dissent is tolerated. All blacks must be leftists or their "uncle Toms" and "plantation-niggas". Such disgusting, racist hate-filled stuff emerges from the far left and the home of the ACLU daily. Condi Rice is "Bush's plantation favorite".
The left had all the cards and blew it. They couldn't deliver. After 40 years folks got tired of the leftist liberal philosophy. It just doesn't sell anymore. John Dean's book will be read and lauded by the folks who want to hear that Bush, Cheney et al are using the Nazi playbook and have less conscience than their "kind, loving, liberal" counterparts who have their bloody mace hidden under their chair.
The liberal/left socialist politicians are the ultimate power-grabbers. They live for it, even moreseo than Bush, Cheney et al EVER did or could. Cheney was quite happy running a company. Bush was quite happy kicking back. They'll both be happy after their term is over. A liberal politician is never happy doing those things - they NEED power. They NEED to tell people what to do and how to think. They are folks with massive inferiority complexes, who then seek to control the way others think and live. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condi etcetera believe in what they are doing - they are not in it for the power. That is where they differ from liberals who will sell the nation to anyone who will VOTE for them and give them the POWER they crave.
On a small scale they are the homeowner's association officers, on the medium scale they are the Olbermann's who live to tell others what to think and on the big scale they are Pelosi, Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton, for whom POWER is the only thing that makes their miserable lives worth living.
That's the authoritarian angle poor ol' bitter Dean overlooked.
