South Africa
The Left's opposition to South Africa some years back was less about the oppression of a race (a real problem) than it was about South Africa being a major ally of the U.S. in Africa against the Soviets and their attempts to expand their influence there.
I don't think most people realize what the situation would be today in places like Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central and South America if the Soviet support hadn't crapped out.
Oddly, leftists seemed to have no problem back then with societies that treated all of their citizens the same way blacks were treated under apartheid.
