The old timers didn't stay together because marriage was more stable back then, they were forced to stay together by law, custom, church and social pressure.

All I have to go by is my own extended family and ancestors, but those aren't the motivations I've seen over my lifetime.

The word is "commitment." It's fallen out of fashion, on a number of fronts.
