Actually, I wouldn't really know. I haven't played the game in a long time, and I don't doubt the rules have changed over the course of a lifetime away from it; even if it's amongst those in your own age cohort.

The important thing to remember, is there ARE rules. The fundamentals of mating and bonding may remain the same, but the strategies and customs of courtship are culturally determined and constantly under revision. Women vary and what they expect does,too. Sometimes "aloof" works, sometimes, "sensitive", sometimes "cool and disinterested", sometimes "passionate", sometimes, "take charge". And some women actually are attracted to "aggressive" and even "brutal", mistaking them for "decisive" and "strong". Face it, if the bad boys weren't successful so often, there wouldn't be so many of them.

Is it any wonder so many good men, appear to get it wrong? It
would be a lot easier to be sincere if it wasn't expected to be manifested in so many different ways. Why do you think the guys always seem to be begging for a little consistency from the girls? Eventually, they get tired of guessing wrong and just go ahead and get married, often to the wrong woman. It's not fear of committment, it's waiting for the gentle sex to finally come out and tell you what they really want.
