"Comittment" is the largely the result of coercion by "law, custom, church and social pressure". Exceptions conceded, men in the past weren't that any more noble than they are today, they just had a double standard they could use to cover their affairs and transgressions (if they could afford them), one that everyone winked at for men, and brutally enforced for women.
