not a lot, but some

I'll probably return to that document for a more detailed look later. One of the first things it occurred to me to do was divide the illegal immigrant estimate by country by the population of the home country. Tentatively, it looks like the rate correlates nicely with distance from the US. Europe isn't broken down by country, but using the EU population, the correlation may not hold. Not a big surprise given economic parity. With the others, countries with much weaker economices, from Mexico (8%) through the Philippines (0.3%) to India (0.02%) there's a rough correlation with distance.

The total from Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Brazil is an even 8 million. 2/3 of the illegals come up from the south, but focusing unduly on that group risks overlook the other 4 million from other countries. 4 million is nothing to sneeze at.

Which leads naturally to the question: If Arizona's cops would know an illegal when they see one, how would they recognize any of the other 4 million? What do they have in common with the south-o-the-border group but not with legal residents?
