So, where does that leave Asians?
It can't all be about being "non-white," since Asians in recent years (generally speaking, of course) seem to be doing fairly well.
A lot of problems of assimilation or issues of immigrant success may be less about specific races than specific cultures.
If anybody in my neck of the woods got seriously bugged by listening to people around them speaking other languages, they'd go nuts in short order. I hear all varieties of Asian, lots of Spanish, and a surprising amount of German and Russian. Others, I have no idea at all. I actually kind of like it...in crowded restaurants or other places the chatter fades very quickly into white noise, and doesn't bother me.
