Your analogy needs a bit of work. Much of the current immigration problem is less about dynamic young people moving in to enhance our civilization, and more about Mexico shaving off its underclass to become Someone Else's Problem. We do have a lot of immigrants coming into our country that are definitely helping raise our living standards - I do live in Silicon Valley - but they aren't crossing the southern borders in the middle of the night.
For the record, the current polls show from 50 to 60 percent national approval rating for what Arizona is doing. I think what's scaring the crap out of the Democrats is that it will probably work, and do so right in front of everybody in the country.
Barriers at the border would also work. This is why a lot of people don't want to see that, either.

- Seems the same people who dislike the Arizona law, also dislike the American flag.
