Which is why I think we can do better.

"The fact is, the human genome is the result of billions of years of haphazard evolution, "random selection," and to be frank, it's what they call a kludge. Evolution doesn't go for elegance, or simplicity, or beauty. It goes for what works right now, and if some of the genome is garbage, some leftovers, and some held together with duct tape Mother Nature couldn't care less."

You are 100% correct, there is no rhyme or reason to evolution. It is a totally random and impersonal process, which is why 99% of all species which have ever lived are now extinct. Even if a species does become well adapted to its environment, it could easily be wiped out by a large space rock, or maybe some star 10 light years from here could go supernova and irradiate the planet. "Mother Nature" doesn't care less because it can't care less, there is no intelligence to do so.

Which is why I believe that Humanity, even in our present state of just learning about genetics, could and can do a far better job. Will we make mistakes along the way? You can count on it, but they'll be no worse than the billions of mistakes that "nature" has made in the long history of life on this planet. Unlike nature however, we will actually learn from them. We are the first species on this planet that's capable of taking our evolutionary destiny into our own hands, and building our progeny and descendants as we see fit. We will no longer be slaves to happenstance.

As Mr. Hart said, "Man is not a fallen angel, but a risen ape." And one day, we shall raise ourselves to godhood.
