(almost sounds like a Robert Ludlum title...)
OK - lemme see if I have this all straight, Lee:
You want to improve the human species through direct genetic manipulation of individuals, not through the more classic (and fascist) method of eugenic breeding programs - but so the improvements breed true in the usual way. You see this occurring mostly in privately funded private labs...
If an experiment goes wrong, no one needs to know.
Excuse me; make that: privately funded secret labs, tricked out with the latest in artificial wombs, where "Bury the mistakes" is the watchword. I don't even want to think about where the private funds are going to come from...
And out of that, I see a thousand different species emerging.
Uh huh... and when the first new models roll off the assembly line and into the light of day - what then? Instant acceptance into the Brotherhood of Man? Or perhaps you mean for the new species to supplant/supercede/rule over the old? More likely than not, they'll be greeted by whatever's the local equivalent of villagers with torches and pitchforks.
If this weren't such a crock of crackpot crankism, it'd be goddamn scary. Meanwhile, Lee, I suggest you do some more reading. A whole lot of science fiction authors have thought this scenario through a lot farhter than you evidently have. Start with Brave New World, which suddenly has a lot more relevance. Don't skip Nancy Kress' Beggars in Spain, either.
