You didn't even see past your own nose! (Or maybe you just saw what you wanted to see...)
There's a very good political reason why eugenics rapidly became anathema around 100 years ago: it's inevitable transformation to tyranny. What 1984 was to Stalinist socialism, and The Handmaid's Tale was to Christian fundamantalism, so Gattaca was to a social order based on eugenics. (A strong case can be made for Brave New World as Gattaca's precursor)
In basic words, eugenics always comes down to: who decides what is desirable and what isn't, and how is it enforced? Who shall be allowed to breed, and who not? No matter how benign the stated intent (some of the original advocates of eugenics - a.k.a. social Darwinists - expressed the best of motives), the evil comes forth as soon as one attempts to impose a program like that on human society.
A few million Europeans, tens of thousands of Africans, and gods only know how many Asians were murdered last century in the name of 'racial purity', 'ethnic cleansing', and the other euphemisms used by eugenic totalitarians. A few thousand Amercans died to stop it.
Just what is it you want to unleash here, Lee?
