While I was working on Stanford campus, I ran into people so damn intelligent they had to carry their brains around in a wheelbarrow. They had published dozens of books and papers, had initials behind their name requiring a business card six inches wide, and were worshipped in the academic field.
And I wouldn't trust them to change a flat tire.
There's a hell of a difference, as Stephen King pointed out, between intelligence and "smarts."
Chomsky has too large a body of work and opinion for me to make blanket statements about everything he says, and I wouldn't dream of criticizing him on something totally outside my field like linquistics, but those areas where he overlaps with my interests shows a lack of realistic thinking at best and sheer hostility towards the American system at worst.
