As is typical you make slanderous claims without knowing any of the facts- First off, The organization I work for is a non-profit company, we are supported by a private grant and by the organizations that give us money in exchange for use of our facilities. We recieve some money from the government for special projects. The NSF money my project got was to procure a technology that will greatly benifit astronomy. The item we want is not in production yet, the point of the grant is to entice companies to make the item a product.
As part of the process we accept bids from any company that is interested in building this item for us- the company that looks like it can offer the best product for reasonable cost wins... There is no pork here, this is business, competitive bidding, and we couldnt afford to do it if it wasnt for the NSF money... In return we will be on the cutting edge of astronomy and our facilities will be in more demand... By bringing this new technology into the marketplace astronomy worldwide benifits... THE ONLY way for all this to happen is with some government funding- what would you suggest, we hold a bake sale?! government funding is neccessary for some projects, and we have to prove to the NSF that the money is a good investment before we see a dime...
You clearly are ignorant on the realities of cutting edge research... it isnt cheap, and the return is not always in cash- but it is worth it-care to guess how many of your modern conveiniences were at one time unprofitable ventures supported by government? (start with the internet that you use to spam us)
Another project, (I am not a part of it), is the interferometric linking of the 2 keck telescopes- this is funded and worked on by NASA and JPL... it is a critical advancement in astronomy, please tell me who else would fund it, and who else has the genius to make it work?
some projects need government support, they get the support in the hope that it will pay off in the future... sometimes they dont, but when they do the return is immense.... the only alternative is to never try...

- The use of a 100% NONcommercial handle minimizes the potential for (often misinformed) ad hominem attacks.

- Why censor reform proposals and their justifications? Sure, pro-entrepreneurial reforms could displace some, but they could empower many far more.
