Bigoted? I'll have to ponder that. I have always felt that bigotry was about how you treat people more than what one theorizes about the nature of a race or culture. It is easier to control how we behave than how we think.
I favor caution in expressing private thoughts in public venues. If his opinion were posted on a billboard or voiced on the media in would definitely be over the top because it would be a sales pitch. In a private conversation it would simply be an opinion that could be rebuffed or even ridiculed (as we are doing). I try to think of internet forums as private conversation but it is tricky at times.
Anyhow, not his best moment but not enough to condemn him as a bigot imo.
I can understand how you feel about his comments re your friend. If I were convinced that he made those comments vindictively it would anger me as well. As an Agnostic rather than an Athiest, I tend to take any comments on an afterlife in the best spirit.
