There are hundreds of non-Gospel traditions that have built up over the years in all sects of Christianity.
Christmas at my church is celebrated with a tree behind the altar, a tradition going clean back to the Roman Saturnalia, but more associated with Germany later. Some traditions credit Martin Luther with being the first to decorate a tree indoors. Certainly not gospel, though.
Heck, most modern Christian traditions are pagan in origin, yet no less a part of Christianity for all that.
The names of the three wise men have been held to be Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. Yet the gospels do not name them, and to the best of my knowledge, do not even number them as three.
Christianity is two thousand years old, and as encrusted with additional non-gospel material as a coral reef. It is from certain such traditions that Gibson's movie is drawn.
But it's the basics that count.
The guy at the football games that holds up that sign, "John 3:16," is talking the basics.
