the link to John 3:16 doesn't exist, so the main point of your post was lost on me. But the last paragraph really resonated. I can't imagine how *any* ultraviolent film could lift someone's spirituality. I actually start to wonder if Gibson is trying to 'break the boundaries' of public taste in the same cheap&nasty vein as say, Damien Hirst, or any other cynical practitioner of 'politically correct' contemporary 'art'. - or maybe he's just cashing in on the lowest common denominator of film audiences? .. in any case, as a 'non-Christian' myself, I can definitely say that some of the teachings of Jesus (and of some of those who followed him) are definitely moving to me - I can consider & learn from them. OTOH this obsession with the crucifixion is as alien to me as a summer afternoon on Neptune. Jesus was *not* the only great spiritual leader to be viciously murdered by the Romans. - This film would only alienate me from Catholicism - or at least of his particular tradition. .. a pity, since I have lived with, worked with and learned from many Catholics over the course of my life.
