fair enough, so it's his personal statement (based on an existing religious tradition). - and my personal statement is: I'm sick of violence in movies, whether Gibson, Schindler, or Ryan (see my post 'maybe' above, in this thread). Seeing things from your point of view is valid, so long as one sees the 'artist' (filmmaker, performer, whatever the context ..) as simply an individual, who is free to make his/her statement no matter how offensive. But the 'artist' (sorry for the quotes, I'm a bit of a Bach/Glenn Gould snob) *does* make an impact in a way that you or I, mouthing off our positions, never do. So in my opinion, there's a responsibility there. - And finally, the bottom line for me, is that I just dislike the guy, he strikes me as a borderline psycho (calm and in control until a certain sequence of buttons is pushed ..) - to hell with him and his 'snuff movie' (a good description by another Zoner). [ - Btw I don't know why you keep mentioning how well it's doing at the box office: what significant point does that prove? that it really is a good film? - at the most, it proves that people are different, simple as that probably.]
