Years ago, while riding in a NY taxi, I saw a herd of the pious carrying signs and placards picketing a theater. There was a warning of damnation being iminent for any who crossed the picket line. The show was "Old Calcutta."
Naturally, I had to go. I wanted to see what the hoopla was about.
Howard Hughes had a miserable flop on his hands called "The Outlaw." He figured, correctly, that only controversy could generate enough interest to drive people into the movie and make it a financial success. He was right.
Mel Gibson is not unaware of this. Controversy sells. And he is exploiting this to the nines.
I will see this movie, and I would not have been interested if not for the flalp over it. I am not to be counted among the pious, merely the curious. And I think there are millions like me.
