What about the video that shows them seconds before the break up started.

They were all strapped in with their suits on. Could they have even gotten to the door in time and wouldn't they have had their gloves on.

I think they all went down strapped in their chairs, not realizing the shuttle was breaking up until it actually broke up. The Pilot stayed at the stick until the end.

BTW, I imagine piece of the shuttle will be turning up for years to come in East Texas.
