Can I be sure that life started on Earth?

"Certainty is not what Science is about. Right now it is by far the most probably hypothesis. This is a borderline area where progress is slow because of the vast barrier of time between the beginning of life and today."

And evidence of life on Earth 3.9 billion years ago could be part of this slow progress?
It seems to me that somone arguing for Intelligent Design is going the mention that evidence of life can be found in the oldest of Earth's rocks, and is going be refering to an old earth, compared to the "creationists" who seem to talk about a young Earth thousands of years old.

I think we can dismiss the idea that life began as simple chemical reaction, unless we include in the definition of simple, an *unknown* chemical reaction.
"Simple life" is yet to be created by scientists. We have yet to create anything which could be called synthetic life. A lifeless world is unlikely to create a hair dryer, 747 airplane, button, or a nylon sock but somehow it's suppose to create something beyond our present capability.
