Compassion has nothing to do with it.

Principle does.

Free speech is only free if it's free for everyone, not just the people who make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Dissent is the measure of democracy. There can be no change without criticism.

Voltaire once wrote, "Monsieur l'abbé, I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write." "Quotations Page", http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/35376.html Anyone who has read even the least bit of Voltaire's works would know he wasn't speaking from compassion. He was speaking about the free discourse necessary for a nation to grow, prosper and reform.

But of course, Voltaire was a French rationalist, writing in 1770, and widely read by educated Americans restive under the boot of imperial Britain. The Germans didn't wrap their civic brains around this concept until the 1920s for about a half an hour. (They are doing better with it now.) So I can see how you might mistake what is clear-eyed legal logic for some mushy romantic version of compassion. It's your heritage.

Whispering treason is a dangerous thing. It is character assassination and intimidation all wrapped up with a pretty bow in the cheap paper of propaganda. If you know of treason, shout it from the rooftops, and be prepared to testify to it in court. Why? Because it's the law, that's why.
