Doesn't libel require a lack of evidence for the charge considered libelous?

For libel to be disproved, there must be positive proof that the statement made against the person charging libel is true, not that it isn't false.

The burden of proof is on the person who accuses another, falsely or spuriously (speculatively). This can be both a civil crime and the other, more serious kind. Civil out in the world; perjury if under oath.

In civil court, the burden of proof goes the other way. You must be careful about making unsubstantiated charges of criminal activity against another person, because they can sue you, and if you can't prove the truth of what you say, they win.

A case made into a movie, huh? The law is not a screenplay. I wouldn't base my confidence in my ability to assassinate someone's character on how it plays out on the big screen if I were you. They often take dramatic license to enhance the story.
