Mary Anne, I agree that it's somewhat disconcerting when an atheist seems almost militant about insisting their view of the world is right but I also understand the frustration SDF has with any tolerances toward religion at all.
By allowing this little speck of doubt about the existance of a God or higher power to continue coming from extremely rational people like yourself you do somewhat empower the wackos. It may be miniscule but it's still there. I often wonder, if I wasn't indoctrinated with tales of Easter Bunnies and Santa Clauses, if I wouldn't have come to the beliefs I have now a whole lot sooner. Belief in God or whatever you want to call it is essentially belief in magic. When humans are told magic exists it opens up this ability within them to grant the illogical creedence.
I think it's fine for people to seek out magic from time to time in their lives. I can have it in my choices of entertainment. It enriches my life experience but I also know it can empower people it shouldn't. There's this fine line between sanity and insanity that society walks when religion and spirituality exists in culture. It takes but a whisp of the wind to knock the balance off drastically.
