No, religion has always had quite the tenuous toehold on society and we have a rich history of bloodshed to accompany it.
Obviously, the philosophy you're talking about does not create that type of chaos in our lives and I'm not threatened at all by humans that seek to limit their vanity and promote empathy for other similar organisms but your description contains words such as "sacred". Maybe it's just my limited understanding of the history of such a word but it immediately conjurs up the image of something blessed by some omnipotent creature.
My own personal philosophy seeks that same inner peace you speak of but for more basic reasons. I've simply found it a wonderful survival technique and one that improves my days. I seem to have no need to add the meditation and ritual you speak of to come up with the same results. I do remember in the past though how the ritual could be fun and a wonderful excuse to spend time with others. There's the rub though. I simply don't have many people that share my philosophy that are close by. Ritual is tough to perform by email.
Please try not to repress things Mary Anne. The world is a richer place without you being shackled.
