If someone is using others to shield them while attacking you and yours, the blame is squarely on their shoulders, not you. Imagine if the Air Force had been forced to shoot down flight 93 on 9/11. Who would've been to blame for the deaths of the passengers and crew, the Air Force or those who hijacked the plane?
