"War without end"

Bush will be out of office soon. His successor will determine how long we focus on the Middle East or if we pull up stakes altogether.

A better analogy to the current leadership cycles is one of the Roman Emperors. Emperors come and go, 4 years...8 years, it makes no real difference, eventually they are gone. Threats to Rome become immediate and fade away or keep growing until they overrun the Empire.

The Islamofascist threat is real. How large it is at any time is hard to tell. Unlike the Huns, you can't send spies out to count horses and men and the distance they camp from the city gates.

Unfortunately we have corruption from within. Folks who would work with the Huns if promised power. Folks who would sell Rome out for a title and some people to boss around.

Europe is Carthage. They are awaiting the fall of Rome and remain civil only inasmuch as trade requires to sustain prosperity. They root for the Huns if it means more power for Carthage.

Meanwhile, Rome grows more decadent from within. The entertainment and cultural indoctrination of the barbarians taints each successive generation and soon there is little to distinguish the difference between the barbarians outside the gates and inside the gates.

Everything regenerates. History does too. If the concept of justified violence ever spreads from the soldier in a military environment to the masses in the civilian sector, then we are in serious trouble and will, indeed, be little better than the Islamofascists.
