As the leaders one has blindly followed become more and more obviously bereft of honor and integrity, when the positions one has advocated turn out to be unmitigated disasters, when the dishonesty and corruption of the regime one has defended can no longer be ignored or denied, when all that happens, one is left with two options.

The first, easiest and only intellectually honest option, is to recognize reality and admit one's mistakes. It is to try to learn the lessons of failure, and attempt to apply those to a brighter future.

The second is to attack those who were critical and to blame the victims. That has the advantage of one never having to admit they were wrong, dead wrong, and accept responsibility for their actions.

It's a tragedy, not in the least for them. Forever destined to live in a fantasy world where they have always been correct, where the rest of the world is wrong, and where their noble disguises for greed excuse all manner of cruelty and inhumanity, they will go through life smug and bitter. Mindless of the death, destruction and misery they have caused.
