I overlooked an axis

That would be the one that measures the expectation of simplicity. I think it could be conceptualized as another bipolar dimension, whose origin is the idealized state of a perfect match between expectation and reality. It's a measurable quantity, I think: Correlate a person's ability to extrapolate from a current situation with the actual outcome. The closer the correlation the more accurate the person's perception of reality. The farther from center you get, in either direction, the lower the correlation.

Expectation of simplicity has to be a relevant contributor the "AC" phenomenon, because dogma is characterized by oversimplification. A high-dogmatic would favor the simplicities of his/her dogma over the evidence of reality, and resolve perceived conflicts in favor of dogma.

One manifestation of an unrealistic expectation of simplicity is the need to reframe complicated ideas or expressions into simpler jingoistic forms. The insistence of RightWing dogmatists on reducing all debate over a complicated issue like Iraq into a binary choice between "surrender" and "stay the course" is a classic illustration of the principle. As is "diplomacy = appeasement"; how's that worked out for us the last six years?

The drawback to simplification is that it falsely reduces our options. We have many more choices between those extremes, and the real challenge is to find the one that produces an outcome maximally in our favor; that is, there's an optimum outcome rather than an absolute one. The expectation of simplicity is a serious intellectual handicap because it blinds one to possibilities that may be superior to one of the binary extremes.

To put it simply, the choice between "surrender" and "stay the course" sucks. Both amount to failure, and we have to look elsewhere if we want to avoid failure.

I can't disagree with your characterization of the Republican leadership as having betrayed its own principles. Suppose I were to bring up the old chestnut about how Communism has never been given a fair test because its leadership wasn't true to its principles and every attempt to implement Communism has been flawed by human failings...how would you react? Do flawed implementations of Republicanism invalidate it? Hmmmm?
