In agrarian societies, and industrial societies that still have workers brought from agrarian circumstances, children are more than labor -- though they are that. Children are the family's retirement plan. Children are essential for the continued economic health of the family.

Childhood mortality is more than a tragedy in such circumstances. It's a disaster. So one has many children to guarantee the survival of a few. Birth control becomes a sin because it undermines the social structure that supports the religious institution.

Birth control is folly if one can't rely on the one or two children one has to survive into adulthood. So it becomes imperative that women subjugate their other talents and ambitions to their biological function. If women don't want to do this, then they must be persuaded, tricked or forced. The health, wealth and freedom of women are sold for their ability to breed, and often with their own connivance.

We have seen in our own past, and in Africa in modern times, that, in order for a society to control its population, its women must be empowered to control their lives and their fertility, and in order for women to be willing to give up bearing many children, the children they do bear must live, in overwhelming numbers. No more starvation. No more epidemics. No more factory, mining, and agricultural injuries of children. And education, for the children and their parents.

You got it partly right. That's the rest.
