No. They're working on "Macbeth".

All those witches.

But mostly, books are challenged because they have naughty words in them. The next most common reason: sex. Sex, sex, sex. All that nasty nasty sex. Those are obviously not the left.

I know that reprehensible incidents have occurred on college campuses. Throwing stuff at people, stealing newspapers, heckling... Sounds like a fraternity party, with politics. Rude? Sure. They don't come to my library demanding that I remove things. If anything, I get more requests to expand parts of the collection from people on the left.

The ALA keeps a list of the books that are challenged in libraries of all kinds, from reports submitted by libraries, here. Please note that no conservative authors are on the list. Yes, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is still number 5, sadly. Number 1: Ghost stories collected by a noted folklorist. Number 2: A non-explicit story about a child who lives with his divorced father and his father's boyfriend. (See also: Number 11, the lesbian equivalent.) Number 3: An equal opportunity offender (cited for sex, racism, language, violence), a memoir of growing up black and female in 1930s and 1940s America. Number 4: A novel in which authority conspires against a lone dissenting student. Number 6: Another equal opportunity offender (cited for violence, racial slurs, profanity, and -- no kidding -- not supporting traditional values). Number 7: All 6 books. Witchcraft. Number 8: Sex. Number 9: Profanity, sex, Satanism. Winner of the Newbery Award for excellence in children's literature. Written by a minister's daughter. Number 10: The whole series, about a girl growing up with her widowed father and her brother. Sex and language. And I must add this one, because I know a teacher this happened to. Number 12: An award winning historical novel about the American Revolution, by the state historian of CT and his brother, challenged for violence, the death of two major characters, defiance of authority (!), and language (several damns, a God damn, and a bastard).

Talk to me some more about book banning. Sure, the left has its nuts. The right's nuts are, however, more numerous and more active.

Are you really afraid that "equal time" for political speech will destroy talk radio? Hm. What does that say about the overall health of talk radio?
