"superstition" is low-rent spirituality

although it's true many people including religious people get drawn to it. The Old Testament often mentions the Israelites and even their leaders, falling into superstition and idolatry, and forgetting about the higher awareness of their ancestors and founders. The higher awareness seems to be be about sensing and understanding one's connection with a "Greater Presence". Superstition however seems only to be about hoping to use magical powers to make one's life inside our little boxes, as comfortable as possible.

Many agnostics and atheists point out that people are worshippers and believers because we don't yet properly understand the Universe and reality. So, when Science fills in those gaps, there will be no need for religion and spirituality. The problem with that view is that the belief they mean - the belief in a "god of the gaps" - is really just a kind of superstition. On the other hand a feeling of a connection with a Greater Presence, is intuitive rather than superstitious. It doesn't have to conflict with science at all.
