I don't think the cavemen were superstitious.
Perhaps their brains weren't developed enough to even think such thoughts.
Look up "Lascaux" and "Altimira" -- those are just the two best-known cave painting sites. You could Google "Neolithic art", too.
Then recall that Neanderthals have been found in what consensus agrees were ritual burials, with grave gifts and flowers.
Brains enough, and superstitions enough, as far back as you'd care to go. I suspect some of the sky legends we still have from the Levant, and the eastern Med generally, came up out of East Africa with H. erectus.
