The law.

It is unlawful to kill, except in self-defence. That's the law, AFAIK.

Mengele was a doctor who decided that the law didn't apply to his prisoners. He took their lives without hesitation. Today, we would call him a psychopath, and there would be considerable evidence comparing his behaviour to other serial killers.

He didn't actually follow the scientific method. He began with the political doctrine that non-germans were inferior, and looked for evidence to support it. He ignored facts that contradicted his belief, not unlike many religious people who look for evidence to try to prove their beliefs. We all know how people died in the inquisitions centuries ago. I'm no historian, but I doubt it would take long to look it up.

Spirituality is imagination run amok. Organized religion is the same thing, starting to snowball, getting bigger and bigger, rolling over and crushing the lives it controls. It is a hierarchical power structure, with top-down doctrines that are not open to revision. When a false idea is 'implemented' within this system, it becomes dogma.

Things I consider dogma:

1. Virgin birth. Doesn't happen.
2. Resurrection. Also doesn't happen.
3. Prophecy. That's just dumb.
4. Communicating with god. There are anti-psychotic drugs available. Take some.
5. Visions of angels. Again, consult a physician.
