Why do we even have to label ourselves and others?

My son at 15 announced he was an atheist.

Even though this, too is a label....he was the one who labeled himself. Anyway my response was of relief.
I told him that I felt he was starting his ideals with a clean slate, by not being swayed by anyone elses' beliefs. All I said was 'keep an open mind"....listen and learn and decide for yourself.
