Mother knows best.

She was correct, and farseeing. Her attitude would have been regarded as subversive not too many years earlier. I was "in" during the time of McCarthy, and he had the country terrorized.

While a militaristic youth, we were OUR Hitler's Youth. I was a Boy Scout, and owe it a lot, really. No love of marching, saluting, that sort of thing, but we backpacked, camped out, and had to get along by ourselves quite a bit.

As Boy Scouts we would go to the local Armory about twice a year and shoot .22s. That was the first and only exposure to them that most kids had. I happened to have been introduced to guns much earlier, and roamed a countryside shooting at everything that moved as a 10 y/o. There was a rumor that in event of war, with either China or Russia or both, that all Boy Scouts would be issued .22s. I now realize that as folly, but at the time we felt mighty important. (Not too many years later many of us would be issued items much more lethal. And initially feel mighty important, and equally invinvible.)
