America has always had primarily female teachers, remember the old schoolmarms in the cowboy movies? It was work for widows and old maids, the only genteel and respectable way a woman could secure employment until they started piling them into mills and sweatshops. They were always untrained and underpaid nonprofessionals, and I remember not even seeing a male teacher until I got to sixth grade. That's the way it's always been in the US. Men did not go into teaching except as tutors for the rich, or in upper class boy's prep schools. The schools today may be in sad shape, but don't blame it on the little ladies.
And don't you think a 1930 article might just be a bit out of date? Even if you did read it hot off the presses?
