"the dispiriting lie"

And it is a lie, a deliberate and malignant one. The first time I crossed swords with TB on this forum was when he sneeringly questioned my assertion that upon returning from Naval duty in Vietnam I experienced no disrespect from the students at my college because of my service. Neither had any of my fellow veterans, and neither did they report it from any of the veterans they knew. It simply was not an issue anywhere at the time. In fact, it was the veterans, mostly ex-grunts, who were LEADING the anti-war movement, not the comfortable stay- at-homes and draft-dodgers. I personally am convinced it was a malicious meme started by supporters of the war to discredit the anti-war movement: A Rightist tactic we've seen perfected in this administration and in this war.

Well, I can't blame anyone for swallowing an urban myth that was repeated as often as that one was, but to be publicly dismissed for feeling that way when I had actually experienced those times first-hand is a personal insult I still have not fully recovered from, and which I'm not inclined to forgive soon.
