Lembcke's not the only one who's checked into this urban myth. Lembcke's out-of-context response to an attack defending the spitting turns out to have been a sidebar to another journalist's report on the lack of corroborating evidence.

The more stridently you try to defend the notion, in the face of contrary facts, that servicemen were spat upon, the more you illustrate what I'm saying about the way you and too many RightWingers cling to this story. You want it to be true, desparately so, with no regard to the pain you've inflicted nor the poison you've spread by it. It's not me or any Liberal you've wounded by it, it's the very soldiers you claim so sincerely to honor and respect.

You're a hypocrite, Lee, wrapping yourself in the flag while hoping that it's true that American soldiers were spat upon.
