It's always been a tale told by someone else, some friend of a friend of an acquaintance of a distant cousin-aunt.
If you have actual eyewitness accounts, you're doing better than anyone else. I suggest that you look up the journalist and get in touch with him. He'll be quite interested in your success when he failed in a nationwide search, one that included digging into newspaper archives from that era. And before you try to fall back on the "liberal media conspiracy" nonsense, consider that the Orange Country Register never published one report of such an incident, and it's not only one of the country's most conservative newspapers, it's located near Orange County Airport, a major portal for returning GIs. If there'd been any whiff of this at the time, they'd have raised a major stink.
I know this may be hard to accept, Lee, but ya think maybe your four (or was it three? your story's not quite straight yet) redneck uncles might be spinning the story just a little about that "ass-whipping" they and their buddies claim to have administered to some "stinking hippie"? Funny how those old reminiscences always feature the teller in a "heroic" role. Funny how it leverages off an ancient and thoroughly false urban legend.
Why do you want so badly to hang on to that old hateful lie, Lee? What is it that you and other WingNuts get out of nurturing an old grievance even when you learn that it's false?
