shooting in the barrel....
"Just curious...does your local police force contact you before they engage in a shootout? Why not? "
Thats easy. The police are supposed to engage in a shootout IFF there is clear and present danger to themselves or the community, in most cases.
by most departments, its okay to use lethal force against a suspect fleeing. But there are several fine points to this that differentiate what is going on in Iraq.
1) The police are civil protectors performing a role that ALL citizens have consented to by being citizens (not leaving, election etc). If the citizens become displeased with the policing, they may recall the police through the use of their vote.
2) Those policed have say in HOW they are policed
3) The guidelines for policing are NOT arbitrary, that is they are posted in public and the policed have every right to know these procedures (rights) and the police have no ability to break them
So, I claim your position, in as much as it does apply, is wrong. In general, I also claim that your statement has little or nothing to do with the matter. We are not appointed cops overseen by the electorate we are policing. In general I resent (and as a conservative, I assumed you would to) us taking the mantle of global police force.
Even if we WERE cops and your metaphor rang true (in as much as ANY metaphor can be a factual statement!), we are being ACTIVELY recalled by the bodies we claim to be enforcing for (the UN and the COALITION). Additionally, if we were cops the IA would be after us with knives draws, as we are acting in an arbitrary manner (there is no justification for this war outside of 'we wanna do it so were gonna do it')
