A rather silly word but it aptly describes my feelings on this war. I’m not the only one. I saw where ebnelson thought another 45 days would be a good idea. I’ve been leaning heavily towards war since Powell’s address to the UN although the evidence for the most part, was circumstantial.
I think one problem we are having is associating Saddam’s guilt or innocence, with our own politically correct justice system where in some cases, we are more concerned with the rights of the accused than we are with seeing justice done. That’s fine if our intent is to protect the innocent but we are forgetting that Saddam is already “behind bars”. The inability to account for 8500 liters of anthrax or its destruction should be proof enough that Saddam still has it.
Saddam will attack his neighbors again. He has the potential, through terrorism, to attack this country. We’ve all gone over the scenarios to the point of boredom but if there is an anthrax, VX, smallpox, or nuclear terrorist attack, there is no guarantee, in fact it may be unlikely we will ever find the source. The only risk to Saddam is having the materials caught in transit. He’s not going to hand over the missing anthrax for a DNA fingerprint and delivery systems for bio/chem weapons can be built here, traceable to…here.
I’ve gone over and over the reasons and motivations for this war in my own mind.
I like coming to the Habitable Zone to get other points of view. I think you enjoy the intellectual chess that goes on here. I’ve considered everything from “War for Oil” to “Wag the dog”. The conclusion I’m coming to is that Bush is trying to do the right thing and I’ll take him at his word.
Think about it, if you were president and had the opportunity to remove Saddam and ensure the safety of the American people and prevent the affects of another expansionist move by Iraq, would you take it?
Most people say they would support a surgical strike or Assassination of Saddam. Well, I’m starting think a surgical strike is exactly what we’re doing. You don’t wait until the cancer starts to spread before you operate. How clean the ‘cut’ will be depends on the actions of the Iraqi people.
