One size doesn't fit all

"One size fits all" doesn't work any better for foreign policy than it does for clothing. Each case has to be considered on its on. In the case of North Korea, it's quite possible they already have a few nuclear weapons. It's definitely known they have hundreds, perhaps thousands, of artillery pieces in hardened locations that are capable of hitting Seoul. If hostilities broke out, estimates are they could kill several hundred thousand South Koreans even without nuclear weapons. The probable fact that they have nukes makes the situation even worse.

Now, consider what would've happened had Israel not taken out that French-built nuclear reactor in Iraq back in 1981. Before 1990, Saddam would've had nukes. Given his history of using chemical and perhaps biological weapons against the Iranians, there's reason to believe he would've used nukes against them. In that even, he would probably have won that war and effectively doubled his control of the world's oil reserves from 10% to 20%. When he decided to invade Kuwait and probably Saudi Arabia, he would've been in control of about 50% of the world's known oil reserves. Do you think it likely we could've assembled a coalition of nations to go against him, knowing he had nukes and would use them? Yet, would we be willing to sit back and let him control half the world's known oil reserves?

No, it's better to take him out of the picture before he gets these weapons. It may already be too late for that in North Korea. We'll have to use different means for that situation. Now, I can't help but notice the irony of some countries demanding "multilateral" permission before we do anything against Iraq but at the same time demanding we take unilateral action against North Korea. We're trying to get the neighboring nations (South Korea, China, Japan, and perhaps Russia) to help resolve the situation but they're refusing.
