<...Until the right-to-life position includes positions and activities that are every bit as aggressive and intrusive toward the fathers of the unborn, assuring appropriate financial support and protection from abuse...
...To treat women as incubators with no lives of our own once we become pregnant is to treat women as objects in the sentences of our lives, and the fetuses as the subjects.
I find it a bit ironic to have women complaining about nine months of a pregancy (to turn the child over for adoption if unwanted) destroying their rights as an individual and reducing them to objects, and then have them demand that fathers, who in some cases basically donated sperm, be saddled with the financial responsibility for 18 years or more. Apparently it's okay to "enslave" men for the sake of a child, but not women.
For the record, I believe men should indeed be saddled with such a responsibility. But I also do not believe that women should be able to get off the childbirth hook whenever they want, incidentally without even consulting the father.
And before you go off on the physical dangers of pregnancy, I should point out that working your butt off at a low-wage job to support a kid is not without physical effects either.
This begs the question of whose life is dependent on whose, who is really in charge, and who has value.
My children have value. While I am raising them, they are more valuable than I am, and their lives are more imporant than mine. I felt the same way before they were born.
The most insulting thing about the right-to-life approach, though not the most dangerous, is the tendency to assume that, given a choice, women will prefer to abort.
I can't speak for the women seeking advice from family planners, but I do know that the political leaders of the current pro-choice movement are hard over in favor of abortion, as opposed to advising a woman to carry to term and put the child up for adoption. The massive self-centeredness of the entire approach is sad, to say the least. Will post on this in Offtopic again.
